What are the differences between Dual-Motor AWD, Performance Dual-Motor AWD, Tri-Motor AWD and Quad-Motor AWD vehicles?
Customers can choose between four drive systems that distribute power to all four wheels when configuring their Rivian vehicle. Here are some details to help you decide:
Dual-Motor AWD provides excellent performance and versatility while maximizing range.
Performance Dual-Motor AWD offers additional on-road performance while maximizing range.
Tri-Motor AWD uses two motors to power the rear axle and one powering the front axle for elevated performance and maximum range.
Quad-Motor AWD delivers fully independent torque vectoring with one motor per wheel for the highest levels of performance on-road and off.

Why don’t Dual-Motor AWD and Performance Dual-Motor AWD vehicles have Conserve mode?
While Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor vehicles have a separate Conserve mode to drive with only the front wheels, Dual-Motor variants use our Automatic AWD drive system. In All-Purpose mode and above about 19 mph (30 kph), Dual-Motor vehicles will automatically decouple the rear axle to maximize range whenever possible, using only the front wheels to propel the vehicle. Automatic decoupling and recoupling on demand makes a separate Conserve mode in Dual-Motor vehicles unnecessary.
