How can I buy or sell a Rivian through a private party transaction?
Seller
To ensure a smooth ownership transfer process when selling your vehicle, please take the following steps:
Remove personal information and preferences from your vehicle
From your vehicle's Center Display, go to Settings > Vehicle > Service > Clear Settings
Remove vehicle ownership from your Rivian app
Once completed, these processes cannot be undone. The "Clear Settings" function doesn't delete any information stored on the Rivian cloud.
Buyer
When buying a Rivian vehicle from a private party, it's important to transfer ownership from the previous owner to your Rivian account.
Start by creating a Rivian account, then share your purchasing documents and driver's license with us to begin the ownership transfer process.
Open an inquiry form
Choose Ownership transfer, then select Bought from a third-party and tap Continue
Attach and upload pictures of the front and back of your driver’s license, plus at least one of the following purchasing documents:
Signed bill of sale
Signed Title
Registration card
Receipts or title applications are not acceptable purchasing documents to process an ownership transfer.
Note: If the seller has not removed their ownership from the vehicle in the Rivian app, you may temporarily disable app access to vehicle location data to ensure that the seller cannot view the vehicle’s location. From your vehicle’s Center Display, go to Settings > Data and Privacy > Rivian Mobile App to adjust location access.
Rivian will revoke the seller’s access to the vehicle when the ownership transfer is complete, at which time you can restore location access.
Timing
We'll use the information provided to transfer the vehicle to the Rivian account of the buyer. Once all requested documents have been received, the ownership transfer process may take up to 7 business days to complete. To minimize this overlap period, please submit all requested documentation as soon as possible.
