What choices do I have regarding my vehicle cameras?
You can choose separately whether to share images from your vehicle’s interior camera and exterior cameras with Rivian for product improvement. Each has its own data-sharing control in your vehicle’s privacy settings.
Interior Camera
If you enable interior camera data sharing, images of the vehicle cabin and data derived from those images are shared with Rivian. We use this information to improve and develop vehicle safety systems, including machine-learning models and driver monitoring systems that help detect distraction and drowsiness.
Gen 2 vehicles have an interior camera in the rearview mirror. Some Gen 1 vehicles have an interior camera that was disabled through an over-the-air software update. These cameras remain inactive.
You can manage interior camera sharing at any time via your vehicle’s infotainment screen: Settings > Privacy > Interior Camera Data Sharing.
Exterior Cameras
Exterior cameras support several functions, including Gear Guard recording, product improvement, and capturing images in the event of a collision.
Gen 2 vehicles allow you to choose whether to share exterior-camera images with Rivian for product improvement. Images are not captured for this purpose from Gen1 vehicles.
You can manage exterior-camera image sharing for product improvement in two ways:
Protect saved locations: Save the places you want protected as Home, Work, or Favorites in your vehicle’s Navigation app. You must save a location for saved-location protection to apply there.
Turn sharing on or off entirely: On your vehicle’s infotainment screen go to Settings > Data and Privacy > Exterior Cameras Data Sharing.
Privacy around saved locations
Camera data is buffered and discarded in the vehicle memory for the first and last 3 minutes of drives associated with saved locations you set in your vehicle’s Navigation app.
Gear Guard
The exclusion around saved locations applies only to exterior-camera images collected for product development.
This exclusion does not affect Gear Guard settings, event detection, or recordings. When enabled, Gear Guard can detect events and record near saved locations, including Home and Work.
Upcoming Changes
We will use geofencing (automated location-based filtering) to prevent your vehicle from capturing exterior-camera images for product development. This includes Home, Work, and locations you have saved in your vehicle’s Navigation app.
This exclusion lasts as long as your vehicle stays within that area, including while you idle or take longer to park.
