What types of keys are supported by Rivian vehicles?
Rivian vehicles support a number of different options to lock, unlock and start driving.
Rivian Digital Key
Using the native wallet app in a phone or smart watch, Rivian Digital Key uses ultra-wideband connectivity to communicate with the vehicle, allowing you to seamlessly enter and start your Rivian. Your device can also act as an NFC key, with the ability to unlock and start the vehicle for a short time even after the device’s battery is depleted.
Digital keys are supported by model year 2025+ vehicles and most smart phones. Vehicle owners can share keys with family and friends using their phone’s native wallet app. Each vehicle can support up to 8 devices using a digital key.

Phone Key
Managed directly in the Rivian app and connecting over BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), Phone Key enables remote commands and passive entry for seamless vehicle entry and start up.
Phone Key is supported by model year 2022-2024 vehicles and requires a device with the Rivian app installed. Each vehicle can support up to 4 devices using Phone Key.
Rivian Watch App
Like an extension of the Rivian app on your phone, the Rivian watch app gives you remote vehicle commands right from your wrist. And once inside, the Rivian watch app can start the vehicle as long as the app is open on your watch – no phone required.
Key Card
A wallet-sized key card that uses NFC (Near Field Communication) connection to unlock, lock and start the vehicle. Tap the key card on the driver-side door handle to unlock and lock the doors, then tap the NFC reader in the interior to start the vehicle.
Key Fob
Our take on the traditional key fob: an adventure-ready IP67-rated enclosure with a carabiner clip to attach to a bag or belt loop that can easily open the front and rear cargo spaces, lock and unlock the doors and supports passive entry.
