LiDAR and RAP1 Availability
While you may see test vehicles on the road with LiDAR collecting data to improve all Rivian vehicles, R1T, R1S, and R2 vehicles currently available to order do not include LiDAR or the Rivian Autonomy Processor (RAP1). This includes R2 Performance with Launch Package.
Rivian has not announced specific customer availability dates for this hardware. Purchasing Autonomy+, selecting a vehicle package, or choosing a later delivery date does not guarantee that your vehicle will include LiDAR or RAP1.
Does Autonomy+ add LiDAR or RAP1?
No. Autonomy+ is a software package that enables supported driver assistance features using the vehicle’s installed hardware. Purchasing Autonomy+ or receiving it with a vehicle package does not add LiDAR or replace the onboard processor.

When will LiDAR and RAP1 be available?
Rivian has announced plans for future autonomy hardware that includes LiDAR and RAP1, but has not announced specific customer availability dates.
Availability may differ by vehicle model and configuration. Announcements about future R2 hardware do not establish availability for R1T or R1S.
Internal testing milestones and autonomous vehicle partnership announcements also do not establish when this hardware will be available in customer vehicles.
Will ordering or taking delivery later ensure I get this hardware?
No specific order date or delivery window guarantees LiDAR or RAP1. Until Rivian announces eligible configurations and customer availability, we cannot confirm that a vehicle delivered in a particular month will include this hardware.
What will LiDAR do?
LiDAR uses laser pulses to measure distances and create a three-dimensional view of the vehicle’s surroundings. Rivian plans to use it alongside cameras and radar to support future autonomy capabilities.
Having LiDAR or RAP1 does not, by itself, mean an eyes-off driving feature is available. Those features also require supported software and approval for specific operating conditions.
Current driver assistance features require your attention and supervision. You must remain ready to take control of the vehicle.
Can existing vehicles be upgraded with LiDAR?
There are currently no plans to retrofit LiDAR hardware to existing Rivian vehicles. An over-the-air software update cannot add physical sensors or replace an onboard processor.
Will vehicles without LiDAR continue to receive improvements?
Rivian continues to develop software improvements for supported vehicles without LiDAR. Available improvements depend on the vehicle’s hardware and software.
Software updates do not change the installed hardware or guarantee access to features that require different hardware.
