Frequently Asked Questions
How many people can I share keys with?
You can share a digital key with up to seven (7) other drivers, for a total of eight (8) digital keys per vehicle. Each digital key can be assigned to one (1) compatible smartphone and one (1) compatible smart watch.
Do I need an internet connection for my digital key to work?
After initial setup, the digital key on your phone or watch will work without needing internet connectivity.
When will my digital key become available?
Rivian Digital Key will gradually be rolled out to the fleet of Gen 2 vehicles. In order to use Rivian Digital Key, make sure your vehicle and device meet these requirements:
A model year 2025+ Rivian vehicle with software version 2025.46 or later
Rivian app version 3.8.0 or later
A compatible device (iOS 18.5 or newer, Android 15 or newer)
You’ll be notified in the Rivian app and by email once your digital key is ready for setup.
Can I use my digital key if my phone or smart watch is out of power?
Yes, for a short period you can still use your digital key to unlock and start your vehicle, even if your device needs to be charged. Tap the device on the driver’s side door handle to unlock and place it on the wireless charger to start the vehicle.
What if my device does not support ultra-wideband connectivity?
Devices without ultra-wideband connectivity are still compatible with digital keys, but will only have NFC capabilities. You can enable passive entry via Bluetooth in the Rivian app, which connects your phone to the vehicle using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) instead of ultra-wideband.
When active on these devices, passive entry will unlock and start the vehicle using BLE regardless of express mode or NFC authentication settings. With passive entry disabled, simply tap the device on the driver’s side door handle to unlock and place it on the wireless charger to start the vehicle.
Will Rivian Digital Key come to Gen 1 vehicles?
Rivian Digital Key requires a Gen 2 vehicle. On Gen 1 vehicles, features like phone key and passive entry are enabled via a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection, and sharing vehicle access is managed in the Rivian app.
