What is renewable energy matching?
Starting September 23, 2024, we're powering your first 10,000 miles of driving with 100% renewable energy when you take delivery of a new or pre-owned R1S or R1T by the end of the year. No matter where you charge, the renewable energy certificates purchased on your behalf by Rivian will support the transition to a cleaner grid.

What is renewable energy matching?
Renewable energy matching allows people and companies to support the creation of more renewable energy on the grid, with the end goal of powering all of our electricity consumption from cleaner and renewable sources. A matching program is a commitment to measure or estimate electricity consumption, and ensure the amount of renewable energy we develop, source, or purchase, matches or exceeds the amount consumed over the same time period. This ensures that as we use electricity, we’re also helping to add renewables to the nation’s grid, and in places where they can drive the greatest benefits. It is impossible to trace the flow of electricity on the grid from individual sources of generation to individual points of consumption, so matching supports the addition of renewable energy to the energy grid, leading to cleaner electricity for everyone.
How does Rivian provide 10,000 miles worth of renewable energy?
For every vehicle delivered between September 23 to December 31, 2024, Rivian will purchase 4.8 MWh of renewable energy certificates (RECs) generated from wind and solar projects in the US (based on the average EPA Fuel Economy of 2024 R1 vehicles*). RECs track proof of MWh of energy generated from wind, solar, and other clean energy projects. As part of planning for the impact owners will have under this program, Rivian makes commitments to purchase RECs from wind and solar projects, providing an important source of revenue that supports the construction and operation of these projects. The more owners who join the program, the more projects we are able to support, and the more renewable energy those owners help send to the grid. Every purchase will enable the full 4.8 MWh regardless of where you charge your vehicle, even if you’re already receiving 100% renewable energy like you do on the Rivian Adventure Network. Rivian matches vehicles under this program according to industry standards that ensure transparency and 3rd party verification. For more information on renewable energy marketing claims, see the EPA’s Guide to Making Claims (Green Power Partnership) and the Federal Trade Commission’s Guidance (16 CFR 260.15).
* The average fuel economy of 2024 R1S and R1T models is 46 kWh / 100 miles, or 0.00046 MWh / mile, and we add a small buffer to ensure the total MWh purchased are enough to match approximately 10,000 miles per vehicle.
Where will my renewable energy come from?
Rivian’s aim is, first and foremost, to help add renewable energy to the grid where it can have the greatest impact. For this program, we expect to source all of the RECs from projects located in the United States. We use a variety of mechanisms to develop or purchase renewable energy, but in all cases, Rivian prioritizes supporting specific, identifiable projects whose benefits extend beyond the clean energy they generate. You can learn more about our emphasis on community, climate, and conservation impacts with the projects we support in our recent Rivian Story, as well as in our 2023 joint white paper with The Nature Conservancy. Vehicles delivered through this program help Rivian continue to build a supply portfolio that supports high-impact projects that help transition the grid to a carbon-free future, foster the local communities in which they are located, and encourage the restoration and preservation of the surrounding environment. Rivian will report on the full mix of REC supply and the specific projects supported at the conclusion of the program, but you can read more about some of the projects in our portfolio on our blog.
