Core Vehicle Data Notice

Our practices for data related to vehicle components, operation, and performance

Rivian vehicles were designed from the ground up to provide a seamless connected driving experience to help you get wherever you’re going safely, efficiently, and enjoyably. To facilitate this experience, Rivian collects data from and about our vehicles that does not inherently identify any specific individual or household, to support the core functionality, safety, security, and integrity of vehicle performance and components (“Core Vehicle Data” or “CVD”). We use Core Vehicle Data to provide vehicle features and services, to assess vehicle performance and operation, for vehicle repair and safety, and for reliability improvements and future product development, among other purposes.

This Core Vehicle Data Notice (“Notice”) details the Core Vehicle Data that Rivian LLC and its affiliates (collectively, “Rivian”) collect, and describes how Rivian uses and shares this information. To the extent that any Core Vehicle Data constitutes “personal data” or “personal information” under relevant law, Rivian’s Data Privacy Notice will govern Rivian’s use of that information.

1. CORE VEHICLE DATA WE COLLECT

Core Vehicle Data includes:

  • Vehicle manufacturing information, such as make, model, and year; component part numbers; software version

  • Vehicle operation and performance information, such as:

    • Vehicle state (e.g., sleep, standby, ready, drive), odometer reading, vehicle dynamics and torque, tire pressure

    • Vehicle telemetry and log data, such as drive mode, speed, braking, acceleration, steering angle

    • Battery information, charging statistics, current state of charge, thermal information, energy storage, and efficiency

    • Vehicle telltales/indicators (e.g., warning lights)

    • Electrical system functionality, stability control or anti-lock braking system actuation signals, condition of the vehicle and its components

    • Vehicle hardware and software calibration settings

    • Vehicle diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), sensor data, security/theft alerts

    • Autonomy sensor data, including ultrasonic and radar sensor data

  • Vehicle connectivity information, such as:

    • Cellular network, network provider details, connection strength, connection band

    • Wi-Fi connection status

    • Data transfer measurements, connection availability

  • Vehicle service and repair history information, such as:

    • Services and repairs performed on the vehicle

    • Recall information

2. HOW WE USE CORE VEHICLE DATA

Rivian uses Core Vehicle Data for purposes such as to:

  • Provide the core functionality of our vehicles

  • Manage vehicle connectivity, such as to enable wireless voice and data use through the vehicle’s cellular connection

  • Enable ongoing vehicle and feature reliability improvements, such as to:

    • Analyze the operation, performance, and use of our vehicles (e.g., to predict and troubleshoot potential vehicle failures or understand causes leading to a vehicle failure)

    • Identify and address bugs or improvement opportunities with key features such as the infotainment system and related apps or functionality

    • Improve the driving experience through over-the-air updates, including through new features, better performance, safety enhancements, and bug fixes

    • Develop and improve vehicle diagnostic, repair, and maintenance strategies

  • Provide vehicle repair, safety, warranty, collision, and maintenance support and services, such as to:

    • Enable autonomy/driver assistance or active safety features

    • Service the vehicle

    • Deliver an over-the-air software update to the vehicle or repair faults of which we have been notified by the vehicle (e.g., OTA failure)

  • Train and improve our driver assistance algorithms, which increases safety for all vehicles, drivers, and pedestrians, such as to:

    • Improve recognition of road markings and signage, designed to increase road safety by reducing the risk of traffic accidents

    • Improve vehicle safety and convenience features, including collision avoidance brake assistance, lane keep assistance, and distance keeping features

    • Develop new driver assistance features

    • Develop maps and other driver assistance safety features specific to each jurisdiction

  • Improve our vehicles, other vehicle software and hardware, and related products and services, such as through research and development, which includes analyzing and assessing vehicle performance, functionality, and safety to evaluate and further our business, products, and services.

  • Analyze and use for legitimate business purposes, such as to:

    • Detect and address fraud and vehicle tampering

    • Prevent and address vehicle hacking and other safety and security threats

    • Comply with a legal obligation, including to respond to a valid legal demand, providing the information required by applicable law, court order, and governmental regulations

3. OUR DISCLOSURE OF CORE VEHICLE DATA

Rivian discloses Core Vehicle Data to its affiliates and the categories of third parties set forth below for legitimate business purposes:

  • Technology and Other Service Providers. With software, IT, mapping, data analytics, cybersecurity, charging, consulting, financial, legal and other similar providers to support Rivian’s business. 

  • To Comply with a Legal Obligation. When legally required or when Rivian deems advisable to do so, such as in response to a valid legal demand, at the request of governmental authorities or law enforcement, or to verify or enforce compliance with applicable laws. In addition, Rivian may disclose the Core Vehicle Data if Rivian believes disclosure is necessary or appropriate to protect the rights, property or safety of others or Rivian.

  • Corporate Transactions. In connection with, during, or upon completion of a merger, acquisition, asset sale, or other business transaction that involves some, or all, of Rivian’s assets.

  • Other Third Parties. For other legitimate business purposes, such as regulatory reporting or governmental credit reporting.

It is our policy to post any changes we make to this Notice on our Site.
