For most of automotive history, a car was a collection of mechanical parts that stayed exactly the same from the day you drove it off the lot. But at Rivian, we see the vehicle as a living, evolving platform—one that gets better, smarter, and more capable every single month.

Recently, Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe joined Sarah Guo on the No Priors podcast to dive deep into the "Software 3.0" revolution. They discussed why Rivian chose to tear up the traditional automotive playbook to build a vertically integrated tech stack from the ground up, and how AI is fundamentally changing our relationship with the road.

"By 2030 it will be inconceivable to buy a car and not expect it to drive itself."

The conversation also ventured into the future of autonomy. RJ and Sarah discussed the shift from "human-coded" rules—where engineers try to write instructions for every possible scenario—to neural networks that learn from data.

By utilizing our own custom computer chips and a massive, integrated data stack, we’re training our vehicles to handle the complex, unpredictable "edge cases" of driving. The goal isn't just to get from A to B; it's to create a driving experience that feels intuitive, safe, and increasingly effortless.
