Frequently asked questions

Engineering a vehicle for adventure means planning for extreme conditions. Our thermal control system is designed to maintain proper battery temperature in any weather, including the bitter cold. Preconditioning the battery to heat it up in the winter and cool it in the summer allows for maximum range in these conditions as well.

You can charge your Rivian vehicle on the road, at home or just about anywhere there’s an outlet.  Our Rivian Adventure Network is a comprehensive network of fast-charging stations across North America — capable of adding up to 150 miles of range in 20 minutes.  Rivian Waypoints are located near shopping centers, restaurants, hotels, parks and other popular destinations. Rivian Waypoints Chargers will be open to the public and have a J1772 plug, making them compatible with other electric vehicles.  The Rivian Wall Charger is the quickest and most convenient way to charge at home — capable of charging up to 25 miles per hour.  For flexible charging at home or on-the-go, the Rivian Portable Charger plugs into higher-powered 240V outlets as well as standard 120V outlets — capable of charging up to 16 miles of range per hour.  We're also integrating with other nationwide networks to ensure charging is always easily accessible, wherever you go. Charge at any public CCS or NACS charging location, including Tesla’s Supercharger network. Find thousands of charging stations across North America using your in-vehicle touchscreen or plan your trip from the Rivian app. Simply choose your destination and the Trip Planner will automatically route you through any needed charging stops along your journey. Learn more about charging at home and on the road.

Smart Charging gives you a charging schedule based on real data from your local energy provider — so you charge when rates are lowest and your Rivian is still ready when you need it.

How does it know what to recommend? It looks at your utility's time-of-use rates, or off-peak hours if your utility doesn't offer a time-of-use plan, and builds a schedule around it. If your area has more than one energy provider, you'll be asked to pick yours so the recommendation is accurate.

Model year 2022-2025 Rivian vehicles have a CCS charge port and can charge natively with chargers that use the same connector. These vehicles require a NACS DC adapter to charge from a fast charging station with a NACS connector type, such as a Tesla Supercharger.  Starting in model year 2026 and onward, Rivian vehicles come with a NACS charge port and can charge natively with chargers that use the same connector. These vehicles require a CCS1 DC adapter to charge from a fast charging station with a CCS connector type, such as an Electrify America charger.  Do not attempt to use a DC adapter with an AC charger. Learn more about how to use the NACS DC adapter and the CCS1 DC adapter.

Yes, all Rivian vehicles can charge at over 21,000+ Tesla Supercharger sites in North America. Model years 2022-2025 require the use of a NACS DC adapter.

Every kilowatt-hour our chargers deliver is matched with renewable resources like solar and wind, on an annual basis. That means the amount of renewable energy we develop or purchase, matches or exceeds the amount of energy flowing through our Rivian Waypoints and Rivian Adventure Network chargers and into EVs.*  We use a variety of mechanisms to develop or purchase renewable energy, including power purchase agreements (contracts to buy a certain amount of renewable energy at a fixed price for a period of time), onsite and community-based solar and wind projects, and partnerships with utilities. Regardless of the mechanism, our aim is to add renewables to the nation’s grid, and in places where they can drive the greatest benefits. In this early stage in our business, we also purchase a limited amount of renewable energy from existing projects.  In determining which mechanism to use for a given location, we first consider the area’s current energy sources – how much of its grid mix is already renewable and how much comes from fossil fuels. Then, to fill in the gap and reach 100%, we work to add renewable resources either in the communities where our chargers operate or in places where the grid relies more heavily on fossil fuels. Clean energy isn’t distributed evenly across the US today, and balancing clean energy access is a critical step on the path to a more sustainable system.  To get into the nitty-gritty, consider the different roles renewables play in three states: In California, they generate nearly 40% of the state’s energy. In Tennessee, it’s 15%, and in Mississippi just over 2%. Not only do these disparities have local environmental, health and economic drawbacks, but they have system-wide carbon consequences. A kilowatt-hour of electricity in Tennessee emitted 32% more CO2 than a kilowatt-hour in Northern California in 2020, according to WattTime, a tech non-profit who tracks avoided emissions impact of new renewable energy projects. By targeting projects that add renewables to grids with greater emissions, we can boost the carbon-cutting benefits of new wind and solar energy. Our first new megawatt of solar energy demonstrates this approach. It takes time to build meaningful projects, and we aim to continue to build on our first deployment in Tennessee.  Ultimately, our vision is to promote renewable technologies at the time and place where they can have the greatest impact for all, not just our own operations. Learn more about the growing portfolio of renewable energy projects supported by Rivian and our customers.  *Rivian will provide verification of the volume of renewable energy purchased but cannot at this time provide third party assurance of the matching claims made here.
