Once a digital key has been added to your wallet app, it can be used to seamlessly lock or unlock your vehicle with passive entry. Simply walk up to your vehicle and it will unlock—no need to even take your device out of your pocket or bag—and it will also automatically lock as you walk away with your device. Plus, you can access your vehicle using a compatible smartwatch, allowing you to leave your phone at home. On both iPhone and Apple Watch, haptics will indicate with a “tap” feeling when your vehicle locks or unlocks.

Sharing keys is easier than ever

Rivian Digital Key allows you to assign up to 8 digital keys each per vehicle that can be shared via text message with friends and family. Whether your friend is borrowing your car or you have a child home from college for the summer, Rivian Digital Keys are easy to manage in one place.

Future-Proof Technology

Rivian Digital Key is built using the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) standard, enabling compatibility with new and emerging devices and ensuring that the way you access your vehicle is supported by the latest technology in vehicle access. It’s also Rivian’s next-generation key, which will be built into our future vehicle models like R2 and R3.

The CCC was developed in collaboration with the automotive industry and consumer technology companies, including Apple, Google and Samsung. The standard employs advanced sensor technology and dual wireless communication (Ultra-Wideband for passive entry and Near-Field Communication for tap unlocking) built into most mobile devices and your Gen 2 Rivian. This combination enhances the ease and security of using your device as a car key and managing vehicle access through your digital wallet.

Improved Security and Convenience

Rivian Digital Key employs Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and Near-Field Communication (NFC) for a more secure and convenient experience.

Ultra-Wideband not only enables your devices to lock and unlock your vehicle with more accuracy and consistency during passive entry; it also provides extra security. Because it is a time-based radio technology—meaning it measures the time it takes for a radio wave to travel between your phone and car—it’s more precise and difficult to manipulate than other alternatives. As a result, your digital key will lock and unlock your car with precision based on where you are around your vehicle.

Rivian Digital Key also leverages Near-Field Communication (NFC), which allows you to simply hold your device near a reader to access a vehicle—in a Rivian, it’s located on the driver’s side door handle. This additionally provides a reliable backup for you when your phone needs a charge or if UWB is not supported by your device.

You can also still use your phone to access your vehicle, even if your device needs a charge. For more about Power Reserve on iPhone, see hereOpens in new tab. For more about this feature on Android™, see hereOpens in new tab.

If you lose your phone or watch, securing your key is also easier. That’s because your key is stored in your phone’s operating system-controlled wallet, protected by your device’s secure chips, and integrated with tools around lost device frameworks.

Compatible Devices

At launch, Rivian Digital Key is available on Apple iPhone XS and above, Apple Watch 6 and above; Google Pixel 6 and later devices including Pixel 10, Pro, Pro XL and Pro Fold, select Android devices; and Samsung Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Plus, and Ultra (S21 and newer).
