The ask came from all directions—parents juggling car seats, families with teens, people who pack gear into every crevice. What they all wanted was the same thing: an open path down the middle of the cabin for easy access to the third-row and more.
With a car seat installed behind the passenger seat, getting someone into the third row used to mean uninstalling it first. Now the aisle is just there. And it turns out an open aisle is good for more than just getting to the back.
Six things the open aisle is good for
Skis and surfboards, down the middle. Long gear slides straight through the center of the cabin while all six passengers stay seated. Nothing on the roof, nobody's knees against a fin.
Kids who load themselves. A younger child can walk to the third row unassisted.
The dog aisle. The pass-through gives a medium-size dog a place to lie down that isn't a footwell or a lap.
Third row has the good seats. No climbing over anyone to get back there. Walk straight back, sit down. No climbing. Easy as ever.
Easy handoffs. Water bottle, charging cable, the one specific snack. Straight back.
Two adults, two armrests. On a long drive with grown-ups in the second row, the middle seat was always the compromise nobody volunteered for. Now it's a place to put your elbow.
What you keep
Both captain's chairs are heated—just like the second-row bench. Both fold flat. Both retain full car seat tie-downs. Anyone can get to the back without touching the second-row, including the car seats installed in it. Without sacrificing the R1S storage capacity behind the third row.
Each second-row captain’s chair has an individual armrest that stows flush into the seat when you don't want it. Each has a cup holder that folds down from the inside edge with a push-to-release action.
