As you get ready to bring R2 home to your driveway, two of the most common questions we get asked are “will R2 fit in my garage?” and “how much smaller is R2 than R1S?”
These are best answered visually, seeing R2 side by side with R1S.
Our teammate Maston, (who stands at 6-foot-4), is back with a pile of overstuffed carry-ons and an R2 / R1S size comparison to answer this once and for all.
Let’s start outside.
R2 is a mid-size SUV, but it doesn't mean mid-effort, mid-capability, or mid-anything you actually care about. It means R2 is smaller where it matters: easier when you are navigating a parking garage, maneuvering through a tight city block or threading a switchback on a trail. Yet, R2 is surprisingly spacious where you need it.
R2 sits a bit lower and rides on a shorter wheelbase than R1S — and is about 15 inches shorter overall, to be exact. It's also roughly 4 inches narrower. The result is a vehicle that feels more agile and approachable without losing the confident stance and capability expected from a Rivian.
That packing efficiency becomes especially obvious in places like a standard suburban two-car garage. Two R2 vehicles parked side-by-side leave noticeably more breathing room than two R1S vehicles in the same setup. It may sound simple, but those extra inches of space make a difference when you live with R2 every day.
Smartly Packaged.
The new mid-size platform lets us optimize motor and battery packaging so that the space you experience is intentional, not incidental. The result is a vehicle that's one of the most efficiently packaged in its class.
And storage? R2 goes deep. The class-leading front trunk offers 5.2 cubic feet — enough for a carry-on suitcase and a large backpack, or a full set of golf clubs. The dual gloveboxes (a first for Rivian) keep the essentials organized and out of sight. Fold the second row flat and the rear cargo area becomes a level loading surface ready for bikes, camping gear, or whatever the weekend demands. All in, R2 offers 90.1 cubic feet of total enclosed storage. We packed it ourselves: five suitcases, three backpacks, a stroller, and yes, one overstuffed personal carry-on.
R2 proves that smaller on the outside doesn't have to mean less on the inside. It means we did the work to make every inch count.
