Rivian’s Dynamic Headlights Lead the Way

The Dynamic Adventure Lighting system in our vehicles is designed to help improve nighttime visibility. Developed in-house by Rivian and launched in 2025, these were the first adaptive matrix headlights to be activated in the United States.^¹

Matrix headlights are a more advanced type of headlight, made up of many LED “pixels” that can turn on and off individually. Unlike traditional high beams that are simply “on” or “off,” the LED array works with vehicle sensors and software to dynamically adjust the brightness and distribution of the beam projected onto the road in real time. This helps maintain visibility while detecting oncoming traffic to shift the light pattern away from those vehicles. The AutopianOpens in new tab has called it “truly mind-blowing.”

Dynamic Adventure Lighting features Rivian’s Dynamic Adventure Lighting helps you navigate through the darkest of nights with these key features.

Adaptive Drive Beam: The headlight beam actively adjusts the vehicle’s light pattern and brightness to avoid shining directly into oncoming vehicles, while still illuminating the rest of the road.

Dynamic Low Beam Leveling: This feature stabilizes the beam of your headlights so there’s an even diffusion of light out in front of your vehicle — helpful if you’re driving on uneven terrain, bumpy roads or even under hard acceleration.

Dynamic Steering Lights: This feature uses software to bend the beam of your headlights in the direction the vehicle is turning, helping the driver see more of the road ahead when driving around corners and on winding roads.

Segmented Lighting Bar (RGB): Gen 2 R1 vehicles have fully controllable LED segments on both the front and rear light bars, which can change color and express vehicle functionality in surprising ways. For example, you’ll see a dynamic green progress bar that indicates charging or an expressive visualization to alert passing traffic when your roadside lighting is activated. And we add surprises throughout the year, like holiday themes, with software updates.

Courtesy Lighting: Your vehicle’s exterior lights will remain on for a short period of time after you exit your vehicle, which helps illuminate the path to your home or through a parking area.

While adaptive matrix headlights have been available in parts of the world for many years now, U.S. regulatory hurdles delayed their adoption until standards cleared in 2022. Because Rivian designs its hardware and software in-house as a vertically integrated system, we moved faster, bringing this advanced lighting system to our Gen 2 R1 vehicles before any other automaker.

With this approach, we are constantly adding new features and functionality to our vehicles via over-the-air software updates, including new updates to how the lights perform.
