When will Rivian offer the updated backup lamp lenses for R1S?
In March 2023, Rivian determined that backup lamps on R1S do not meet regulatory visibility requirements. When the vehicle is in reverse, the backup lamps illuminate. However, the optical center of the backup lamp may not be visible to pedestrians from certain required horizontal and vertical planes. Though this is a noncompliance issue, the vehicle will alert pedestrians in other ways, including making reverse operating sounds. Additionally, sensors and backup cameras will detect objects near the rear, providing visibility to the rear and triggering visual and audible alerts to the driver.
Rivian will replace the backup lamps on all affected R1S, free of charge.
I’ve seen some recently delivered R1S that have protruding pieces of plastic on the backup lamps. Is that the new lens design?
These extensions are a current measure while we update the lens that sits in the rear fascia of the R1S. Once the new backup lens is available, we’ll schedule a service appointment to install the updated lenses.
When will the updated backup lamps be ready?
We expect to begin scheduling service appointments for impacted R1S customers in July of 2023.
How long will installation of the updated lenses take?
The replacement should take less than an hour to complete.
