Supporting the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary

Securing Sacred Lands

On Indigenous Peoples Day, Rivian invites the community to support the proposed Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary designation led by the Northern Chumash Tribal Council.

As the first tribally led marine sanctuary campaign, this designation carries historic significance both in terms of indigenous-led conservation and in the proposed protection of Chumash Sacred sites dating back 20,000 years. Indigenous-led conservation is crucial in the ongoing efforts to protect the natural resources of which tribal communities have been the original stewards.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is currently seeking public input on the proposal until October 25. We believe that NOAA can meet the Tribe’s requests, maximize conservation benefits and set a high standard for responsible renewable energy development in the surrounding area.
