If you’ve spent time along the California coast, you’ve seen how quickly the landscape shifts. It is when the morning fog burns off, light cuts through and the ocean moves from flat grey to something deeper, warmer and almost metallic.
At Rivian, our paint palette has always been an extension of the places we explore, from the deep woods of Forest Green to the vibrant sunset warmth of Red Canyon.
Half Moon Grey is the newest color in our lineup, offering more depth than El Cap Granite that it replaces, while introducing more warmth and a finer metallic that is a more natural expression of grey. It is subtle in tone and designed to shift with its surroundings — from brighter highlights to darker shadows — offering more transition between light and dark. This refined metallic flake mirrors the glint of mineral deposits caught in the sun, creating a surface that celebrates the rhythmic 'flop' — the elegant journey from a luminous, sandy-grey face to the deep, weathered charcoal of a shadowed crevice.
But this is more than just another shade of grey; it’s a masterclass in color science and organic inspiration.
Rooted in the Cliffside
The name Half Moon Grey reflects both creative direction and a specific location. Inspired by the rugged cliffs of Half Moon Bay, California, this color was engineered to mimic the complex layering of coastal stone.
When you look closely at the precipice where the land meets the Pacific, you don’t see a flat, industrial surface. You see a history of geology: the sun-bleached face of sandstone layered against the dense, ancient weight of granite. Half Moon Grey captures this grounded vibe, offering a sophisticated alternative to the industrial greys we have become used to seeing. It feels less like a cold factory finish and more like something carved by the elements of Earth.
A New Light
Half Moon Grey was designed to shift with its surroundings and move through the world around it:
In Direct Sunlight: The color "wakes up." You’ll notice warm, golden undertones that give it a more luminous quality, catching light in a way that feels natural and refined.
In the Shade: As the sun dips behind the clouds, the color settles into a deep, weathered charcoal. The warmth retreats, leaving a solid, sophisticated granite face that feels incredibly tough.
“We weren’t trying to create a new grey just for the sake of it. We kept coming back to how the coast actually looks… there is always some warmth to it, even when it feels overcast. That is what Half Moon Grey is really all about. Most greys can either lean too cool or too dark. This one has a bit of warmth in it, so it feels softer, but has enough depth that it doesn’t wash out in brighter light. It really embraces the balance of cool and warm.”

Compared to El Cap Granite, Half Moon Grey is noticeably less blue and more grounded in warmth. The metallic flakes in Half Moon Grey are significantly finer than those in El Cap, creating a surface that both sparkles and glows.
Built for the Journey
Rivian vehicles are meant to get dirty, though we’ve all had that brief moment of guilt when a pristine Storm Blue R1T gets covered in trail dust.
Half Moon Grey is one of the most practical colors we’ve ever released. Because it’s a mid-tone modeled after natural earth and stone, it hides road salt, dust, and light mud better than almost any other shade. The fine metallic flakes also help reduce the appearance of those fine swirl marks and surface wear over time.
A Different Take on Grey
Half Moon Grey offers a modern alternative that feels at home in both a downtown urban setting and a coastal campsite. It’s a color that celebrates the rhythm of the landscape—moving from light to shadow, just like the cliffs that inspired it.
We can’t wait to see this color out in the wild. Whether you’re heading to the mountains or just taking the long way home along the coast, Half Moon Grey is ready for the light.
The new Half Moon Grey will be available on R1S, R1T and R2 models. Learn more about R1 and schedule a demo drive today. Reserve your R2 and get updates on production, upcoming events, demo drives in your area and more as we get closer to bringing R2 to the road.
