When we introduced the 2027 R1S and R1T, we shared what's new. Since then, you've been asking us what it all means for your day-to-day— on demo drives, in our inbox, and across social media.
Short answer, quite a bit has changed! A simplified trim structure, a new seating configuration, a new standard wheel and a new color all arriving at once is a lot to sort through. So here's the plain-language version: what’s changed, what stayed the same, which R1 is right for you, and how to get it.
What actually changed for 2027?
R1S is now available with second-row captain's chairs — our most requested interior feature to date. R1T gains a new 20" Adventure All-Season wheel and tire as standard equipment on Premium. Esker Silver, the liquid-metal finish joins the R1 palette. And the whole lineup is reorganized into three trims: Premium, Performance and Quad.
The vehicle underneath is the R1 you know. What changed is how you choose it, and how you live in it.
Where did Dual and Tri go?
When you configured an R1, you weren't shopping for a number of motors — you were figuring out whether this vehicle could get four to seven people and their gear and a dog to a trailhead six hours away, then handle the school run on Monday morning.
So we grouped the powertrains, battery options and interiors into three tiers built around that question instead. It also lines R1 up with R2's trim structure, so the language is consistent across the Rivian family.
Okay, but which one is mine?
Depends on what your adventure looks like.
Did I lose anything in the reshuffle?
Nothing. Quad's power, acceleration and torque vectoring are unchanged. The long-haul range of our largest battery pack is still available. The off-road hardware, the ground clearance, the towing capability, the gear storage that made you look twice at an R1T in the first place — all of it carries over.
How do the R1S second-row captain’s chairs work?
You trade one seat for a useful aisle — and depending on your family, that's the best trade in the vehicle.
The six-seat configuration is built around a center pass-through, so anyone can walk into the third row without folding a seat forward or unbuckling a car seat. Skis and surfboards can slide straight through the middle of the cabin while second row passengers stay seated.
Both captain's chairs are heated, fold flat, and keep full car seat tie-downs. Each one has an armrest that stows flush into the seat and a push-to-release cup holder that folds down from the inside edge. Nothing about the switch costs you practicality.
And if you need seven seats, the bench is still there — available on both interiors on R1S Premium, and on Black Mountain Signature on R1S Performance and Quad.
Is there a difference in EPA-estimated range with the new 20" Adventure wheel and tire on R1T?
Less than you'd expect. The Goodyear 20" Adventure All-Season is balanced for traction and rolling resistance, offering an EPA-estimated 300 miles on R1T Premium, 380 miles on Premium Long Range and 348 miles on Performance.² It's standard on R1T Premium and a no-cost option on R1T Performance. More standard capability that you want while maintaining the driving range you need.
What's this new silver color?
Esker Silver replaces LA Silver as the included paint option across R1S and R1T.⁴
An esker is the winding ridge of gravel and sand a glacier leaves behind as it retreats. The finish borrows that: fine metallic flakes that give the silver depth and movement, so R1's silhouette reads differently depending on where you're standing. It arrived first on R2, and bringing it to R1 puts the two vehicles in a shared palette.
It's available on every trim and with every interior in the 2027 R1 lineup.
Which interiors go with which trim?
Performance and Quad get three Signature interiors — Slate Sky Signature (calm greys, plaid details, walnut accents), Black Mountain Signature (warm ash wood, rich and organic) and Ocean Coast Signature (sandy tones, cool skies, weathered driftwood).
Premium offers Black Mountain (deep black tones, dark ash wood) and Ocean Coast (soft greys, contrasting dark ash).
The names now match R2's, which makes cross-shopping the family considerably easier.
Should I order now or wait?
Everything described here is configurable today. R1S starts at $83,990 and R1T at $79,990.⁵
How do I get one?
Build it. Open the R1 configurator, pick a trim, spec the interior, and see your vehicle from every angle.
Drive it. Schedule a demo drive and sit in the captain's chairs to experience all the interior flexibility of R1S. The pass-through makes even more sense in person.
Actual vehicle capability will depend on selected options and trim. Acceleration timing estimates vary based on battery, tire, drive modes, vehicle load and weather. Timing for 0-60 mph is based on configuration with 22” road wheels and tires and requires use of Launch mode. Launch mode should not be used on public roads.1234
Official EPA values are noted. The EPA estimates range through a series of standardized lab tests that mimic real world conditions. Factors including tires, drive modes, weather conditions, HVAC settings and accessories can all have an impact on range. R1S Premium 410 mile range and R1T Premium 420 mile range and Quad 374 mile range estimates are based on a configuration with 22" road wheels and tires. Range estimates for R1T with 20" Adventure wheels are 300 miles on Premium, 380 miles on Premium Long Range, and 348 miles on Performance.123456
Launch Mode is designed for use on a closed circuit track in dry road conditions. Do not use Launch Mode on public roadways where traffic or pedestrians are present.
