R2 Across America

Over the past few weeks, Rivian team members have been driving R2.

Before yours arrives, hear what they have to say about living with R2, from the family road trips and daily commutes, to all the little moments in between.

2,900-mile family road trip through Cedar Rapids, Denver and Salt Lake City

What is your favorite thing about the R2, overall? “It has to be the rear drop window. There was a specific moment when we were driving through Tahoe National Forest after sunset. Because it was dark, we couldn't see the views, so we decided to roll down the rear window. Immediately, the cabin filled with the crisp scent of the pine trees. It felt like we were completely outside. The wind noise was so minimal that we didn't even have to turn up the music. It created an unforgettable moment that I've been wishing I could get back ever since.”

What is something about the R2 that surprised you? “Sounds obvious, but fast charging has been so easy. I plug in and the vehicle gets to its max charge rate so quickly. I’ll make a quick phone call or run in for a bite and I’m ready to go. It’s so easy.”

As someone who’s driven a lot of R2 prototypes, what was it like getting behind the wheel of a production vehicle? “I've spent a lot of time driving our validation builds, but leaving Normal in a production vehicle – with everything coming together so well – was such a huge leap forward. I was lucky enough to be able to bring my wife along for the drive back to California and she had the same impression. It just looked and felt so refined and well-built. One definite highlight was getting to run some of the trails in and around Moab. We both loved it.”

1,950 miles and counting

What are your first impressions? “It just feels like a Rivian. The interior feel, the driving dynamics – it's instantly recognizable from my perspective as an R1T owner. And I love the Haptic Halo Wheels. Driving across the country in spring, I experienced every type of weather. I saw torrential rain, snow, and strong winds, and it made me realize how sturdy and confident the R2 is in every environment. What stood out to me was how quickly the conditions changed, yet the vehicle never felt out of its element. Between the drive mode selection, lighting, and visibility management, it felt like the R2 was always one step ahead of the environment.”

Drove 17 hours straight—on one leg of a 2,250-mile journey

Tell us about the trip! “I spend my days working on our Autonomy features, so getting to use them and feel the benefits was so rewarding. I think what I enjoyed most was the freedom to really take in all of the sights and landmarks with Universal Hands-Free*. It truly made for a more enjoyable driving experience. There’s no way I would have made it 17 hours without it!”

What is something about the R2 that surprised you? “I have been driving R2 since the early prototypes, but the vehicle dynamics still impress me every time I get behind the wheel. R2 rides, steers, drives and brakes so well. It’s comfortable on long trips, capable off-road and tons of fun on curvy roads. I took the R2 down some farm roads that only trucks usually drive. Even with 21 inch tires, the R2 handled great in All-Terrain mode. My grandma even commented on the ride!”
