The Soul of a Rivian, Sized for Every Adventure
There is a specific kind of energy at our Irvine headquarters when a new vehicle hits the pavement. Last week, that energy shifted into high gear. We opened our doors to a select group of global journalists and creators for our first R2 Pre-Production Drive Event, taking our R2 MVBs (Manufacturing Validation Builds) out of the design studio and into the canyons of Southern California.
The launch of the R1T and R1S was our handshake with the world—proof that an electric vehicle can go further and do more. R2 represents our next chapter. It’s about scale with intention: bringing our design, performance, and technology to a significantly broader audience without losing an ounce of what makes a Rivian a Rivian.
My personal opinion is that I didn’t want to give it back. I have driven a few prototypes, but rarely one so comprehensively charming, fast and capable. I wanted to do more highway pulls in the R2. I wanted to go back to the trails. I wanted to take it camping. I wanted to take it on a cross-country road trip. I wanted to take it to Wegman’s, even, to show it off to my friends and family. It just seems like it’s up for all of that, and then some.
Designed for All
The R2 is built for the big trips, but it’s perfected for the "everyday" adventures. During the drive, we focused on the details that make this vehicle uniquely Rivian.
Inside, the R2 is a masterclass in thoughtful utility. Our media in attendance were quick to notice that there are "no bad seats"—in fact, optimized packaging means the R2 offers more second-row legroom than the R1S.
We’ve maximized every square inch for real life:
The Open-Air Experience: A rear window that lowers completely into the tailgate. For easy access, there is a single button that lowers all four windows and lowers the rear drop glass simultaneously. The R2 gives an open and airy feel, allowing you to immerse yourself in the world around you.
Smart Storage: From the dual gloveboxes to a front trunk that fits multiple carry-on bags, R2 is built to carry your life and your equipment seamlessly.
Flexible Interior: The 40/20/40 second row folds completely flat, creating a level surface for gear-hauling or a comfortable night of car camping at the end of a long trail.
Performance Without Pretension
While the R2 is more compact, it remains a powerhouse. We’ve engineered this platform to be nimble in the city while retaining the "planted" confidence our drivers expect.
This select group of media was the first to drive the dual-motor AWD launch variant. The R2 delivers a spec sheet that punches well above its weight class*:
Performance: 656 hp | 609 lb-ft torque
Acceleration: 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds
Estimated Range: 300+ miles
Off-Road Ready: Class-leading with 9.6 inches of ground clearance.
Fast Charging: Native NACS port (CCS compatible via adapter). Charge from 10% to 80% in ~30 minutes.
*R2 specifications and performance claims are preliminary estimates based on a prototype vehicle. Final production specifications, design, equipment, and accessories may vary. Actual vehicle capability will depend on selected options and trim. Range estimates are preliminary estimates based on the EPA test cycle, and are not official EPA values.
It has terrific off-road chops, very comfortable on-road gives you that same supple on-road yet capable off-road feel that the R1 is known for…I’m prepared to say YES this is worth way more than just half an R1.
Transformational Tech
R2 is not just a software-defined vehicle; it’s an AI-defined companion.
AI was embedded into R2’s technological design from the beginning—starting with the infotainment compute module. We reduced the amount of systems-on-a-chip from 4 in Gen 2 R1 down to 1 in R2, and this single chip achieves 200 sparse TOPS, providing more AI compute power for infotainment than any vehicle currently available in North America.
A standout feature during the drives was our new Haptic Halo Wheels on the steering wheel, built for R2’s software and OS 2.0, helping you navigate it seamlessly while driving.
These large, tactile rollers use high-fidelity feedback to replace hundreds of physical buttons, allowing for "eyes on the road" control that feels intuitive even when bouncing down a dirt trail. And, like every Rivian, R2 will get smarter every month through over-the-air (OTA) updates.
Rivian is a software king, so when it talks about being ‘software defined’ it’s in a way that really works—unlike plenty of its rivals. There is true vertical integration here, and it’s all done in-house.
The Road Ahead
This event was a critical milestone in the R2 launch journey. The feedback we gathered in the canyons last week is already being looped back into our hardware and software teams for additional input and fine-tuning as we march toward the start of production.
R2 isn't just a new vehicle in the Rivian lineup—it’s an expansion of our community. We’re building this for the weekend warriors, the gear-heads, and the families who believe that the best memories are made outside.
