Borealis Arrives on R2

The R2 color palette keeps growing. Borealis is a dynamic, light-shifting purple inspired by the Aurora Borealis, capturing the celestial effects of one of nature's most impressive displays. And it's now available to order on R2.



Nature's Light Show in Your Driveway

Borealis started with our community. During a 2024 solar event, Rivian owners across the country sent in photos of their vehicles glowing under a purple-washed sky and it captured our design team’s imagination.

Months of development brought Borealis to the R1, but mastering the depth of its color shift took relentless iteration. Our design team layered fine metallic flake beneath the clearcoat, tuning both until the paint could hold two colors at once: a deep, rich purple in daylight, and a pull toward blue and red at the edges once the light drops. Stand next to it at dusk (or even under a streetlight) and you'll watch it move between the two. Park it in the same spot every night and the color will still find new ways to surprise you.



A Color That Fits Right at Home

R2's more compact footprint gives Borealis a different stage than it’s had before. With shorter overhangs and a tighter, more upright stance, the whole vehicle sits within your eyeline so the shifting color plays out across the hood, doors and fenders before you've reached the handle.

That scale also makes Borealis feel more at home in daily life — in your driveway, a city block, a parking garage — the places you actually see your vehicle most. A color built to catch and shift with light does its best work there, where you're walking past it every day instead of glimpsing it once from across the road.
